Gary L. McGavin: Nonstructural Seismic Issues in Public Schools

Gary L. McGavin has over 20 years of experience in the design of public and institutional facilities. He has been involved with the design and State Aid Grants for over $750 Million in educational facilities, numerous transportation facilities, healthcare facilities, etc.. He has specialized in Seismic Safety Issues and State level client advocacy. He served for eight years on the California State Seismic Safety Commission (a direct Gubernatorial appointment by Governor Wilson) and has served for ten years on the California Field Act Advisory Board. His background includes experience as an architect, staff geologist and earthquake engineer. He taught geology and soil science at the college level in the Construction Inspection Certificate Program for over 9 years (1978 to 1987) and currently teached full time at Cal Poly, Pomona in the Department of Architecture. Mr. McGavin was the Architect of Record for the Landers Elementary School which was situated less than 0.4 mi from approximately 12 feet of horizontal offset in the 1992 Landers Earthquake. This facility sustained virtually no damage (cosmetic ceiling tile damage only) and was immediately used as an emergency center by the CDF and Red Cross.
      Mr. McGavin has served as the Chairman for the LA City Nonstructural Seismic Code Committee. In addition to the above, Mr. McGavin is a member of the Coalition for Adequate School Housing (CASH), the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI), the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Past State Board of Directors, the National Building Seismic Safety Council (BSSC), Past Member of the Riverside Uptown Kiwanis (Past Distinguished President), Past Member of the Riverside Cultural Heritage Board (Chairman 1987 and 1988), and the University of California Riverside Geophysical Society.
       Mr. McGavin has worked for Wyle Laboratories as an Earthquake Engineer (projects included the Alaska Pipeline), Ruhnau McGavin Ruhnau Associates, HMC Group, and since 1995, has operated his own firm in Redlands, CA.
       He is the author of numerous works including Earthquake Protection of Essential Building Equipment, John Wiley and Sons, Inc., was a co-author of the Architectural Graphic Standards, 7th, 8th, and 9th editions, earthquake pages, and a wide variety of published research topics. He is active in school legislation issues for both structural and nonstructural seismic issues. He is educated in Geology (B.Sc., UC Riverside, 1973) and has a Masters of Architecture (Cal-Poly Pomona, 1978).
