Training Session on Coulomb Stress Interaction Software

At the SSA 2001 Annual Meeting, Ross Stein (USGS) and Shinji Toda (ERI, University of Tokyo) will teach the use of Coulomb 1.5, which performs 3D elastic dislocation and 2D boundary element calculations in a halfspace.

Time: Tuesday, 17 April 2001, 8:00 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Location: Stanford University (attendees will be picked up at the Cathedral Hill hotel at 8:00 a.m. and will be returned at 4:30 p.m)

Registration fee: $50.

Description: Coulomb is a fast, menu-driven Mac program rich in graphics (a Windows version will soon be available). Users input fault geometry and slip, focal mechanism files, or volcanic source parameters, and the application calculates displacements, strains, and Coulomb stress changes at any depth on any surface. The program produces publication-quality figures, but is quick and simple enough to also be used for undergraduate classroom instruction. This course is for anyone in seismology or geology; it was last taught in September 1999, and attendee reviews were very favorable. Attendees will receive a bound color manual and a CD containing the software and tutorial files. There will be one student per computer, so enrollment is limited to twenty persons. The morning session will present the program basics and the afternoon session will introduce advanced topics. The pacing will be unhurried, with ample opportunity for questions and help. If you have a PowerBook, please bring it. The application, manual, and tutorial files are available at http://quake.usgs.gov/research/deformation/modeling
